Color, glow, and natural light with Chris Fain

Easy-to-follow lighting recipes
#1 - Be creative with colored gels
Use 3 x A2 – the first with Clic CTO Gel and Clic Snoot placed camera left, the second with Clic Gel Blue and Clic Barndoor placed camera right, and the third with Clic Gel Peacock Blue and Clic Softbox 2.7' Octa placed above the subject.
Pro tip: When using gels, underexpose the image to get a greater color saturation.
#2 - Create golden hour
Use 3 x A10 gelled with Clic CTO. Place one rear of the subject. Put a Clic Softbox 2.7' Octa on the second one and place it on the same side as the first light – but to the front of the subject. Place the third one on the opposite side and fire it towards the white ceiling.
Pro tip: If you're doing this technique outdoors, remove the gels and set the camera white balance to warm the image.
#3 - Blend flash and natural light
Use 1 x A2 together with an OCF II Adapter and an OCF Softbox 3' Octa. Use the live view in your camera to help set your ambient to the desired look. Place the flash and softbox on the same side as the natural light is coming from. Put your remote in TTL mode and snap a shot, then flip the remote into manual mode and fine-tune the output.
Pro tip: If you want the image to feel more natural, slow your shutter speed down to decrease the amount of contrast.
